Penicillin Residues |
 |
 |
It appears the use of short-acting Penicillin in cull sows has recently led to an increased number of residues being found at packing plants across the industry, according to Dr. William Safley DVM at Spencer Ag Center.
Spencer Ag Center is updating its script for short-acting Penicillin and recommending changes in use of the medication. Dr. Safley says producers should administer short-acting Penicillin at a dosage of 5cc/100 pounds IM, not exceed 10cc per injection site and avoid exceeding 20cc per animal. Slaughter withdrawal is 30 days.
The changes apply only to short-acting Penicillin, according to Dr. Safley. Long-acting Penicillin should not be used in swine.
Producers are encouraged to closely monitor medication withdrawal periods and follow label directions. The increased number of instances of penicillin residues could be the result of enhanced testing for antibiotics at packing plants that has become more sensitive and specific.
