Spencer Ag is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Assistant Purchaser with a desire to learn and support our procurement operations. This position will assist in sourcing, purchasing, and managing inventory of agricultural products, equipment, and supplies. This role requires knowledge of animal agriculture practices and supply chains, as well as excellent organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with vendors and internal teams.

 

About Us:

Spencer Ag Center has served local farmers for over thirty years, providing animal health, nutrition, and veterinary services. We pride ourselves on finding individualized solutions for our customers with technical support and specialized products. Based in Spencer, Iowa, we service roughly a 100-mile radius with feed and animal health. We also serve nationwide with our show feed line, Purple Pursuit.

 

Comprised of 30 individuals, our team spans several positions from delivery drivers, bookkeeping, purchasing, and logistics, to our sales force and veterinarians. Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the procurement of agricultural materials, including equipment, feed, and other farm-related supplies.

  • Support the Purchaser in evaluating suppliers, negotiating prices, and maintaining positive vendor relationships.

  • Monitor inventory levels and place orders to ensure timely restocking of critical items.

  • Research and compare products and services to identify cost savings and quality improvements.

  • Track orders and ensure timely delivery; resolve issues related to delays or defects.

  • Maintain accurate records of purchases, pricing, and inventory using procurement software or spreadsheets.

  • Coordinate with farm managers and production teams to ensure purchasing aligns with operational needs.

  • Stay informed about agricultural market trends, seasonal needs, and new product developments.
